Cerealia 2021 – The Cereal Festival

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and while awaiting the opportunity to reschedule the festival in collaboration with a Mediterranean guest country, the Cerealia Festival Network of Promoters organized a six-month celebratory program for the festival’s tenth anniversary.
Numerous activities were held in person, in hybrid format, or online. The program emphasized the community dimension of the project, expanding its transdisciplinary and interpretative scope, particularly focusing on environmental respect, sustainability, resilience, and well-being.
From June to November 2021, events took place across several Italian regions (Lazio, Puglia, Sicily, Lombardy, Umbria, Piedmont, Friuli Venezia Giulia), addressing cultural, food, and environmental topics. These initiatives highlighted the educational and outreach dimension of Cerealia, which for over ten years has promoted cultural and scientific dissemination, strengthened the connection between production territories and consumers’ tables, and fostered the rediscovery and deepening of traditions rooted in respect for the land and its fruits. The festival also sought to valorize Italy’s and the Mediterranean’s tangible and intangible heritage.
The focus on rice included several in-depth initiatives, particularly in Sicily, Lombardy, and Piedmont. The festival concluded in Rome with a transdisciplinary, educational-scientific conference, featuring prominent representatives from institutions and research organizations.
Several activities were dedicated to children and youth, in line with the United Nations International Year of Fruits and Vegetables 2021 (IYFV).
All activities were carried out in compliance with anti-COVID regulations, and the majority were free to attend.
