Cerealia 2015 – The Cereal Festival

From June 9 to 12, 2015, the 5th edition of Cerealia – The Festival of Cereals. Ceres and the Mediterranean took place, promoted by M.Th.I. and the ArcheoClub d’Italia – Rome branch, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Italy, the Croatian Tourism Board in Italy, and Casa Croata.
The festival received patronage from Expo Milano 2015 and was included among the initiatives promoted by Expo Lazio 2015. Other institutional sponsors included the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economic Development, and MiBACT. The festival was also recognized with the EFFE Label 2015/2016 (Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe).
The theme of the 5th edition was “Women and Cereals: The Seeds of Life”. As a diffused festival, the 2015 edition featured activities beginning May 30, ahead of the main program, taking place in various museums and archaeological sites in Rome, including Capo di Bove, the Ara Pacis Augustae, and the Porta S. Paolo Museum.
Events were also hosted in restaurants and culinary spaces, such as Chinappi, Pasta Asciutta, and Bibliothè, as well as in educational centers, including the CTS Study Center. Other activities took place at the Campagna Amica Farmers’ Market at Circo Massimo, the Capannelle Farmers’ Market, the Domus Romana, and Teatro Sala Uno.
The program dedicated to Croatia included two major photography exhibitions, seminars, concerts, book and video presentations, tastings, and traditional cooking workshops. Additional events featured meetings and show cooking focused on Italy’s staple dish, pasta, with attention also given to rice, corn, and minor cereals. For the first time, seminars were offered for agronomists and communication professionals.
An important aspect of the 2015 edition was the consolidation of collaboration with the Gustolab International Institute for Food Studies, along with partnerships with two specialized masters: the Cultural and Food Tourism Master of the CTS Study Center and the Food and Enogastronomic Traditions Master of BAICR Culture of Relationships, in cooperation with University of Rome Tor Vergata.
A total of 46 events were held, not only in Rome but also in other areas of Lazio (Artena, Ariccia, Tarquinia), Calabria (Vibo Valentia), Veneto (Altino and Forte Marghera), Umbria (Gualdo Cattaneo), and Puglia (Bovino, Minervino Murge).
For this edition, the organizers of Cerealia, together with the Castelli Romani and Capannelle Farmers’ Markets, dedicated the festival to miller Silvio Paoselli, who sacrificed his life to defend his mill and his dignity.
