Cerealia 2019 – The Cereal Festival

The 9th edition of the festival took place from June 6 to 9, 2019, preceded by thematic events in Sicily and the Castelli Romani, and then expanded to specific initiatives across Lazio, Puglia, Sicily, and Lombardy. The chosen cereal for this edition was spelt, the oldest cultivated wheat by humans, while sustainability and the circular economy inspired the guiding theme “Ethics on the Plate: Food, Health, and Environment”. The focus was an analytical exploration of how behaviors and lifestyles impact the territory, human and animal health, and the quality of the environment in which we live. The guest country was Tunisia. In collaboration with the Embassy of Tunisia in Italy, a full day on June 9 at Wegil in Rome was dedicated to Tunisian culture, highlighting its long-standing historical ties with Italy since classical antiquity. The program included B2B professional meetings, public initiatives such as seminars, taste workshops, meetings with producers, performances, and tastings, aimed at promoting Tunisian food and wine excellence and stimulating cultural and commercial exchange between the two countries. The overall program was rich and diverse, confirming the diffused festival structure with events in various locations in Rome and other Italian cities, including Palermo, Tarquinia, and Milan. It also included activities commemorating the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death. As every year, the Cerealia Festival Network expanded with the participation of public and private organizations, contributing in various ways to the realization of the program. The patron of Cerealia Festival 2019 was Michele Maffei, Olympic fencing champion, President of A.M.O.V.A. (Association of Gold Medals for Athletic Valor), and culinary academic. In 2019, a cooperation agreement was established between Cerealia and A.M.O.V.A., which involves the annual participation of a gold medalist athlete as the festival patron.
